Quality of Life

Why it Matters

Quality of life is important to every resident and community. It results in a safer and better-looking city. By focusing on this issue, there is an increase in homeowner curb appeal, real estate value and city pride.

Harvey residents pay the highest tax rate in Cook County. They pay more for groceries. They pay more for gasoline. They pay more for vehicle insurance. However, they see very little in return for what they pay.

My Plan

As Mayor, I will make the quality of life a top priority.  We need to have pride in our city.  Here are a few of the quality of life goals my administration will work to accomplish:

  • Develop and execute a plan to maintain and/or resurface damaged roads.

  • Develop and execute a plan to repair or replace street lights.

  • Develop and execute a plan to repair or replace sidewalks.

  • Develop and execute a plan to handle open dumping and pest control.

  • Develop and execute a plan for demolition or repair of abandoned homes.

  • Replace faded street signs and install additional signage (stop, one way, yield, etc.).

  • Create a Department of Senior Services:

    • coordinate with Department of Aging and other resources;

    • create a Senior Advisory Committee;

      • develop short and long-term programs to improve the quality of life for Harvey’s senior population.

  • Create a  Senior Transportation Program to allow seniors ease of travel throughout the city for all needs and outside the city limits for grocery shopping, health visits, and prescription pick-up.

  • Create an opportunity for Youth Engagement:

    • create a youth city council to encourage youth civic engagement;

    • groom young adults for leadership responsibility;

    • have youth council advise and recommend issues to mayor and city council.

  • Cultivate relationships with religious leaders to address spiritual health as a comprehensive part of community health.

  • Embrace all cultures by recognizing our uniqueness through our diversity.
